Developmental and dynamic dimensions of hate, rage and violence

Harold P. Blum, M.D.

Abstract

In the aftermath of the Holocaust and Hiroshima, mass murder and terrorism., hate is of foremost theoretical, clinical, and social and cultural significance.  As is painfully obvious in the inhuman attitudes and behaviour throughout the ages, hate and violence abound, in individuals, in families, and in small and large groups.  It is important to understand hate in terms of its development, control, and expression. Peaceful values and ideals must be nurtured within families, in schools, and in social, political, and professional organizations.  Psychoanalytic insight can be extremely helpful in understanding and defusing strife within small groups.  Nevertheless, large groups have so far been largely impervious to psychoanalytic insight into trauma and unconscious conflict.

For a mobile order

Sophie de Mijolla-Mellor

Abstract

Mobile order is to be considered as a moving structure whose existence is temporary, triggered by a perpetually renewed source of impetus. It is not only an order but also an agreement or « concord ». The author of this paper posits that, in light of the anxiety engendered by the fear of movement and the establishment of a fixed order disputed by some and then destroyed, only the ability to build a « mobile order » will enable us to escape from the permanent tension between order and disorder.

Protest, Indignation and Resentment in the Treatment of a Borderline Patient

Heinz Weiß -

Abstract

Using clinical material from a borderline patient the author studies what happens when such reparation fails, and argues that in this case more primitive mechanisms are brought into play often leading to retaliation, revenge and resentment. The author will further explore the part played by the primitive super-ego, both in perpetuating the damage as in obstructing forgiveness and the working through of guilt.

Fighting Terrorism by Exterminating Terrorists is Like Scooping the Flood with a Spoon

Mikhail Reshetnikov

ABSTRACT

Our society views terrorism as the result of terrorists’ activities. This perspective is rather superficial though. More appropriate question, although a more difficult one, is about the cause of terrorism and terrorist worldview, which is spreading in a pandemic way. This question becomes even more important in view of the qualitative transformation of contemporary terrorism: single terrorists have been replaced by organized groups and armies with thousands of members, which claim to be separate states and political subjects, so that the leading countries had to form a military coalition to fight them.

Dynamics of Change – Succession and New Beginnings in Intergenerational

Relationships

Vera King

Abstract

This article will deal with the generational dimension of social transformation. In particular, the psychological dynamics of generational succession and new beginnings will be discussed, as well as the inescapable generational tension associated with it. The experience of transience, of limitation in generational succession, associated with the phenomenon of “being replaced” in one’s lifetime by the subsequent generation, constitutes one of the (comparatively least systematically examined yet) most fundamental psychic and cultural challenges. For both the handing down of the “old” and the creation of the new, both succession and new beginnings in the generational relationship are contingent upon a predominantly productive confrontation with the necessary experience of one’s own limitation and transience. A productive way of generational transmission is based on recognizing the subsequent generation as a subject with its own right - in the sense of Ricoeur’s idea of ‘recognition’ as a ‘gift’.

Social Dimensions of Interpersonal Conflicts

Angela Moré

Abstract

Intrapersonal conflicts are determined by social influences. The fundamental conflict between the psychic agencies Id and Super ego, which also involves the Ego as a triangulating third, results from the internalization of social norms. Those norms were acquired by the young child in his oedipal conflict when he identified with the father, when he is not only seen as a rival but also as an object of love. Thus, the question raised by the author cannot be whether there are social dimensions in interpersonal conflicts but how they are characterized and how they interfere with those conflicts or determinate them. Conflicts arise in relation to differences of interests between persons, organizations, instances, nations or cultures etc. and are structuring organizers of the various kinds of relationships between them.

The family beyond borders

Jorge Gravanita

Abstract

Family bonds have been traditionally viewed as establishing stable modes of structuring personality but nowadays the human family is subject to transformations and qualitative changes. This means that family bonds can remain beyond the geographical, cultural and political borders, and remain through ties crossing different spaces and forms of communication, culture and civilization.

The conflicts within the couple

Jean-Marie Brohm

Abstract

Starting from an analysis of interpersonal conflicts within the couple, the author studies it in a in a double historical contextualization, and according to the cultural areas and religions. As showed in many anthropological works, relationships between the different genders and the different marital unions whether they are legal, prescribed, imposed or tolerated, the author comes to the conclusion that every statement on the couple and its conflicts sends back to the personal experiences of the annunciator, including when he/she considers himself or herself as an objective researcher and protected by his/her theoretical knowledge.

Body, gender and sexual practices in couples

Helga Krüger-Kirn

Abstract

Following the hypothesis that social imaginations and discourses influence the individual self-constructions I will exemplify this with short examples, which refer to sexual practices, especially the sado-masochistic one. These practices are considered in a psychoanalytic view on linking the questions of sexual practices to Freud’s concept of differentiating between Sexual and Sexuality. It shows that sexual desires are always linked to cultural structures, today especially to the neoliberal discourse of freedom and self-optimization.

Which answers to adolescent acting-out?

Anne Descusse, Jean-Luc Kurukgy, Anne Perret

Abstract

The signs that teenagers send us are messages that fit into the space between two generations. These are the current and past symbolic coordinates of the subject who are questioned and who question the relatives who surround him and in particular his parents. It is in particular the paternal function and the solidity of the symbolic function that are questioned in their consistency. These resonate with its unconscious marks and with the symbolic inscription of its fathers and mothers, with what they bear from previous generations. It is thus a back and forth between the subject and the other that is established through what he addresses us, avalanches of questions waiting for answers if not answers. These messages often take the form of directed deeds, actings-out, waiting for guarantees. This work could be assimilated to a smuggler's work that could be valuable, in some cases, as an initiation ritual.

Duality or duel within the couple

Sophie de Mijolla-Mellor

Abstract

Not or no longer being a couple is experienced most of the time as a failure and a solitude even besides that singles have in reverse a social life freer and thus richer. However, discovering that the couple is made up of two people and not a merged entity may appear so unbearable that a permanent duel still seems preferable to a separation.

Digital activism: Neoliberalism, the internet and the possibility of «mobile order»

Pablo Bergami G. Barbosa

Abstract

Considering the importance of the Internet in the political life of today's world, the author analyses the part played by political activism in the global computer world, a type of digital activism born concomitantly with the creation of the internet, a type of activism whose goals and strategies are deeply rooted in the founding characteristics of the web itself. And concludes that such a digital activism provides us with a precious empirical occurrence allowing us to ponder on what a truly democratic mobile social order could become, based on the socio-economic and instinctual conditions that are those of our time.

Receiving claims and refusals, from young people of the suburbs to welcome them in the world and renew democracy

Joëlle Bordet

Abstract

This article looks at different ways in which young people in working-class urban neighbourhoods express contestation and it analyses the meaning of their protestation from the perspective of democratic renewal. Three ideal-types are defined as a way of showing both the major differences between these modes of contestation and their expression, and the need to recognise them with a view to renewing democracy and fostering creative conflict, as a source of collective inventiveness. The link established with the question of ‘mobile order’ explored by Sophie de Mijolla-Mellor provides the means of positing analyses which are specific to young people in working-class urban neighbourhoods within a more global framework which concerns society as a whole.

The Benefits of conformism in a post-republican Turkish high school

Simruy Ikiz & Gokce Tuncel

Abstract

This paper, inspired by a symposium entitled ‘Conformism, Conservatism’ held in Turkey on the 25th and 26th of July 2016, explores the advantages and disadvantages of conformism, considering the authors’ own experiences in the school where they spent nine years of their life (from primary school to the end of secondary education) in Istanbul. This has led them to bear witness to the past from the psychoanalytical and sociological perspectives that are their own and to draw connections between theory and lived experience as a means of opening debate on the benefits of belonging to the school community once they had entered a post-school existence.

BUT I AM NOT BLACK

Christelle Evita

Abstract

Can one be both a French woman and have black skin? This paper calls upon a series of satirical sketches both written and performed by the author to express a range of feelings, including astonishment, anger, sadness, weariness and even the feeling of strangeness which overwhelm her when the fact of her being French is called into question. The notion of identity is explored in disconcerting fashion through the identification imposed upon the author by the ways in which others see her.
